This phenomenon has a name: "Gell-Mann Amnesia". When you hear the media reporting on something you know about, and know the media is wrong, but then immediately forget that dissonance and trust the media when they report on something you don't know about.
A great deal of news has to come from the mainstream media because alternative sources (blogs, etc.) don’t have the resources to gather info. You just have to be on guard. But why can’t right wingers produce their own version of the NYT or Reuters? Fox News is the best they can do.
